manufacture & Testing sailing Rigs on a New Wooden Trimaran
When I interviewed the founder and publisher of Duckworks Magazine he shared some great tips for anyone who might reconsider building their own trimaran sailboat. This narrative is excerpted from our conversation. One of the subjects he covered was trying out different types of pilotage rigs for a newly built wooden sailboat … Which, of course, could truly apply to a self-built wooden Trimaran.

Should a new sailboat maker simply buy rigging and sails? You know, it depends. Some plans, such as Chris Ostlinder’s A18T trimaran, tend to be “high-tech.”
You can read about the A18T on the Duckworks website. These plans call for fittings, and have stresses on things that are similar to what you see on Hobie Cats and things.
Sew Smart – Fit First! 2(5) – Make Test Garment
To make a test garment from your sloper you will need to use it as a pattern. If you are using a computer pattern, check the program to see if a seam reduction highlight is available to turn off and on. Also know if this space in the middle of sewing and cutting lines is changeable or if your options are limited.
Traditional fabric to use for this purpose is unbleached cotton muslin. Important features to think include being able to recognize grainlines certainly as well as to place identifying marks on the fabric. Iron or press along a grainline to recognize centre front and centre back.
An easy way to recognize grainlines on woven test fabric is to pull a thread horizontally from one selvedge line across to the other. You can also do this along lengthwise grain. The lines created by removing the thread should meet at right angles.

Though unlikely, if it is proper to test your sloper in a non-woven fabric, grainline will be quite different, if an issue at all. Know the characteristics of fabrics you will be using after the test because differences would apply to singular knits, duplicate knits, felted fabrics, bias pattern cuts…etc.
If essential to add seam allowances manually, duplicate the sewing lines by copying them 5/8″ (or whatever width of seam reduction you prefer) beyond the sewing lines. You will need paper that is wider than pattern pieces by twice the amount of seam reduction that you want.
